Most people refer to the 87-90 pre-magnum models as gen 1 and 91-96 magnum
models as gen 2 even the bodies were basically the same with a different
front clip. That would make the 97-00 gen 3 by that theroy. I agree with
you that 97-00 is really the second incarnation of the Dakota line but we
are in the minority.
