As strange as
this
may sound, I've never had this happen to me before. Is this common?

Yeah it happens . usually when someone tightened it up too much and the rust seized the lug on the stud. than along comes monkey boy and instead of a 1 quick pull forward than a few reverse to get it loose he just goes ahead and gives it the ol 400 rpm trigger pull on the air gun. ive had a new mechanic do that once on this guys truck. the dude was there watching and he wasnt happy at all. but yes it does happen
