Jon,
Since the A-518 is based on the 727, a good tranny shop should be able to
build it up to 727 durability (the tranny was weakened in an attempt to make
it shift softer). Once this is done, the tranny is just as bulletproof as
the 727 as long as you don't have to OD switched on. Use the OD for highway
cruising, etc. - just don't use it in the 1/4-mile, towing, or long mountain
grades....

For those of you who don't know, MoPar Performance offers the A-518 tranny
($1500, probably cheaper thru Mancini Racing or other vendors) for retrofit
on older cars & trucks - i.e., it does NOT require a computer, it just has a
simple electric OD switch. The only problem is that the tailshaft of the
tranny is beefier than most older cars were designed for. Several MoPar
rags have done swaps - smaller cars, such as A-bodies, require butchering
the floor pan and welding in a section to increase room under the tranny
hump. I believe MP also has the A-500 available....
