I can only recount the history.... Any conclusion or reasons why are up to
somebody else. ;-)

I bought my '98 5.2L 4x4 CC on 3/10/98 (built in Dec. 1997). From the first day
there was a slight knock or ping with mild acceleration under load (like going
up a hill). There was no noticeable ping at WOT. At 2,669 miles I installed a
180 T. Stat. and switched to synthetic oil in an attempt to cure it... No
success. At 5,471 miles I installed JBA headers on my vehicle and have not
heard (with the notable exception of Bosch +4 plugs) a single ping since. I
have only burned name brand (primarily Mobil but also Gulf, Texaco, Sunoco,
Shell and Exxon) 87 octane gasoline since new.
