Talking about tappets noises, try and drive a 1.6 Tracker. It sounds as if
the valves are falling out of the engine casing. But then what do you
expect for a cheap dirt machine that can really go in the dirt vice the
RAV-4 and CRV (which I dare adventurer off road) for 10K.

I don't have a '00. But my father owns a dealership. This sounds like the
same thing DC had with a lot of automatics. It is especially noticeable in
front wheel drives. It is simply a poppet valve banging back and forth due
to a pressure instability in the tranny. Many people have gone nuts about
that sounds but it is perfectly normal and indicates no harm done. This
problem was basically designed in and DC doesn't feel like fixing it. One
of those problems similar to the infamous knocking egines, which my truck
happens to be one of.
