FWIW, the 8.5mm Jacobs wires I used to have on my 5.2L would arc to the heat
shields. I removed the heat shields permanently almost a year ago with no
problems. I'm now running Magnecor wires. Sometimes, when I check for arc
in pitch black conditions on a hot engine, I can see faint flashes of light
down at the plug (at the end of the wire). I presume some of the spark
energy may be arcing from/thru the plug to surrounding metal. I am using
the Jacobs ignition box (which I do NOT recommend), so I may have extra
spark energy - I'm also using Autolite 3924 plugs.
