This may sound a bit cliché, but use a block heater. I know they don't come
standard on the US vehicles, but you can get one here for about $30
Canadian, that's probably about .03 cents US. :) On the really cold days, I
plug mine in for about an hour or so and she starts like a charm.

My 99 318 2wd does the same thing. I went on Bernd's advice and cleaned my
IAS motor and it helped the problem, but it still dies on the cold mornings.
