Cat Problem?

I have a 97 CC V6 with stock exhaust. I can hear and feel a hollow buzz
upon acceleration when in second or third gear (auto). It changes pitch
during acceleration and quits after gaining speed or letting off the
accelerator a bit. I think maybe something might be loose inside the cat.
And what is the best way to check the cat - tap and listen for rattle?
