Stiff Shifter

I have a '97 5.2L 5sp, and shifter just seems stiff. I don't know if it's me,
or if that's how all of them are. I seem to grind 2nd every couple days. Is it
just my unit? What is the most common reason/solution, and what costs are
involved.
