That's fine... But the bets still on. Go to a local locksmith and stand there
while he cuts a dupe so you know he's not putting any mystery codes in while
you're not looking.

Is you in or is you out?

1998 Dakota Pickup's Owner Manual, page #9
SMART KEY: (actually, they spell it SMARY key, but we know what they
mean)
Your vehicle is equipped with the Smart Key system. Wth this system,
an electronically coded ignition key sends a signal to the vehicle
electronics. If the electronics recognizes the signal, the vehicle
will start and run. If the system does not recognize the signal the
vehicle will start and run for 2 seconds then shut off.
The Theft Alarm Light (the infamous green halo light) will illuminate
for about 2 seconds when the ignition switch is first turned to the
On position. If the vehicle electronics do no recognize the signal
from the ignition key, the theft alarm light will flash continuously
to signal that the vehicle has been immobilized....

p. #10
Replacement Keys
NOTE: Only keys that have been programmed to the vehicle electronics
can be used to start the vehicle.
At the time of purchase, the original owner is provided with a 4
digit PIN number. This # is required for dealer replacement of
keys. Duplication of keys may be performed at an authorized dealer
or by using the Customer Key Programming procedure. This procedure
consists of programming a blank key to the vehcile electronics. A
blank key is one which has never been programmed.
NOTE: When having the Smart Key System serviced, bring all vehicle
keys to the dealer.

Hate to dispute you Flip, but it just ain't so unless you consider
a '98 and a
'99 Dakota not new enough.  We have had extra keys made for the '99
and there
is nothing funky about it --like going through the factory to get one.

The "special" ignition keys have a chip or something in 'em which
makes the
handle part much larger or thicker than normal.  The standard keys
have no such
feature.

If you don't believe me I'll make you a bet.  Go to you're local lock
smith and
have a dupe made...  If it don't work, I'll send you the cost of the
dupe.
Deal?  Just so you know, I'm saying all this from memory...  I'm not
looking at
a service guide or anything so it's a fair bet.  If I'm wrong I'm
good for the
$$.  Otherwise Bob (A.K.A. Knuckles) Nichols from Joisey will break
both my
legs! ;-)

No, if you have a newer model Dak, it's true.  I'm astonished that
noone on the DML seems to know this.  They told me about it when I
picked up my Dak- I don't think it's even optional, it just is
there.  The key sends an electric signal to the ignition- if it
doesn't get that signal, it will start, then cut out in a couple
seconds.  I'm pretty sure there are instructions in the owners manual
about the key. They tell you how to program a new key for the
ignition, but you need 2 keys already set for the ignition to do it.
If you lose a key, you have to order a replacement from the factory
using the # that is on the little plastic bag the keys came in.

I've heard of these types of "secure" ignitions before and I think
Dodge has
got 'em but it's an optional thing (not even sure if it's offered on
the Dakota
line)...  The keys look totally different (much larger and a
different cut) so
unless you got some kind of special option (which you would obviously
know
about) I think the guy is full of it.

If there is a circuit city around I'd give them a call (and see how
much they
would charge to install it) and see what they say...  I dunno why,
but the
circuity city near me has an install crew that really *seems* to know
their
stuff (they installed my alarm).
Good luck.
