I tried getting confirmation from my local Dodge dealer, but they suggested
I try the Dodge web site, which was of no help. Their brochures were too
general to answer the question that you so nicely addressed.

Thanks again. I'll look into the NV242/NV231.

Subject: Re[5]: DML: 4 Wheel Questions - Hope this settles it

<<The reason I asked the question: I'm in the process of buying another 4WD
vehicle, and was going to buy another SelectTrac Jeep - until I saw those
beautiful 2000 Dakota Quad Cabs and was told the transfer case was the same
as the SelectTrac.>>

Quad Caaaaab... <drool>... I love my club cab but I'm finding it real hard
to resist these new QC's! You were told correctly. Selec-Trac and the
Full-Time option on the QC use the same transfer case, namely, the NV242.
Also, the standard part-time 4wd T-Case on both models is the NV231.

<<I live in the mountains (North Lake Tahoe) where we are constantly
traversing snow and ice and I have never ever had a problem with slipping
and sliding because of my Jeep's SelectTrac.>>

Tahoe rules!

<<As you probably know, the Select-Trac Part-Time Hi/Lo locks the
differentials and allows the vehicle to track through any condition, no
matter how severe.>>

I hope we are not confusing things here... What's being locked in Part-Time
mode is the differential in the transfer case --not the differentials on the
axles. I say this because you said "differentials" (plural) and only one
diff. is really being locked (the one in the T-Case) on the NV242 or NV231
for that matter. I dunno about tracking through "any conditions" either...
I've gotten stuck more times than I care to admit! :-)

<<Does the Dakota's 4wd-Hi Locked (a.k.a. part-time hi) position lock the
differentials?>>

Differentials (plural), no. The center differential in the T-Case, yes.
Both
vehicles use the exact same T-Case so they function exactly the same...
What
it sounds like you want is the NV 242 Full-Time T-Case and a traction aiding
device in the rear diff. (namely the Trac-Lok, Sure-Grip, LSD, POSI,
whatever-they-call-it, option they offer).

<<Do you know where I can get confirmation on whether Dakota's 4WD system is
using the Select-Trac?>>

Sure, call your local D/C Jeep dealer and ask them if the Selec-Trac uses
the NV242 transfer case... I can confirm D/C Dodge uses this T-Case for
full-time 4wd on the Dakota line. Get a brochure on the 2K Kotas if ya'
want to confirm that.

<<Thanks again for your help?>>

Was this not helpful? :-)
