The 5.7 being a pushrod engine actually makes a lot of sense. NASCAR rules
dictate that the engine run must represent a production engine and only the
archaic pushrod carbeurated engines are allowed. The production version can
be fuel injected, but the block must be the same. Chrysler designed this
engine primarily to be cocky about getting back into NASCAR and made a new
HEMI that is 2 cubic inches below the limit set for running hemi heads back
when Chrysler was kicking everyone's ass with the 426. One cool benefit is
that with the smaller block the "street" version can have the true
hemishperical heads. I think it's gonna be great when about 5 years from
now Ford and Chevy start whining again that they can't beat the HEMI and
NASCAR once again changes its rules to cut Chrysler out of the HEMI in
NASCAR business.
