If you go to an extreme overbore to get the extra cubes you will actually
lose power.

The bores will flex. This causes two things to occur. First, you'll lose
ring seal, power goes right out the window. Second the bores will squeeze
the piston increasing parasitic friction loses.

When drag racers overbore (after sonic checking the block and literally
going through dozens of stock blocks to find good cores), they fill the
water passages with "HardBlock" or some similiar fill to support and
strengthen the bores. You can't do this in a street engine because of
cooling issues.
