Web hosting and your site on www.dakota-truck.net

I'm considering moving dakota-truck.net to a different ISP because the one
its at right now seems pretty unreliable. It was good when Jack Snodgrass
was running things but ever since he got out of the business and sold it,
its been down quite a bit. As a part of the move, I want to consolodate
both home pages (dakota-truck.net and www.cs.fredonia.edu/~stei0302/www/dakota)
into one site at dakota-truck.net. Due to the large amount of data (well over
1GB and growing by almost 50MB/month) that the home page uses, and the
special needs of the page (custom programs, cron jobs that must run, etc.)
the standard hosting options just don't work out and aren't economically
feasable either.

So what I'm looking to do is to buy a server and colocate it at an ISP.
I'm also planning to offer virtual web hosting to help to offset some of the
costs. So, if any DMLer wants their page to be:

   http://www.dakota-truck.net/whatever

that will now be possible, or you could also have something like:

   http://whatever.dakota-truck.net

Or, you could also have your own domain name. Services offered would be
a web page, ftp access to upload your stuff, POP3 mailboxes, or e-mail
e-mail forwarders, e-mail aliases, etc. (The usual stuff...) Telnet
shell access could be available too, if desired.

I haven't really gotten far enough into it to set up a pricing structure
or anything, but it should be competitive, and if you have a large web
site, I plan to have plenty of drive space available. The connection
would be fixed bandwith, so there would be no limits or extra charges on
the amount of data/month that can be transferred to/from your site. I was
thinking somewhere in the range of $10-$20/month for something like 100MB,
perhaps depending on what other services you want. This is all very
preliminary though.

At this point, I'm just looking into the feasability of doing this. I'm
only planning to do it if I think I can use the virtual web hosting to offset
a large portion of the cost, as neither the DML nor myself can afford to
bear the full cost of something like this. I have a few people interested
already, but not enough to go ahead with it yet. So, if anyone would be at
all interested in this, or if you have any questions, please drop me a
private e-mail. I was thinking of offering a discount or additional services
to DMLers. Also, if anyone wants to commit to using it now (before it is in
place) or donate money to help build the server I would certainly be willing
to give you a good deal. (The old bird in the hand deal...) :-)

  TTYL!
