If you're referring to the black "thingy" on the driver-side valve cover
that connects to the air hat, yup...that's the crankcase breather. Take it
out and shake it. If it rattles, it's broken and you can purchase a new one
(Fram) from PepBoys for about $8.00. If it doesn't rattle, you've got a
different problem.

(All that's in there is a baffle and some foam/wire mesh to filter the oil
vapors which in turn get sucked into the intake system (emissions stuff).
I've taken one apart and that's ALL that's in there.

Subject: DML: Crankcase Breather Filter/Thing

Anybody notice that the crankcase breather filter/thing rattles like a
son-of-a-gun when you first start the truck? Note: They call it a filter
but
I can't see how this thing (looks like a PCV valve but it's on the opposite
valve cover from the PCV) filters anything.

It's louder than the lifters, combustion, fan or anything else under my
hood.
Have I got a problem or is this normal?
Tom
