Last weekend I did a bunch of mountain driving and thought I heard
something I really didn't want to hear, especially on a weekend where I
have to look damn good (best man in a friend's wedding). My fears
confirmed by the maid of honor (fortunately, it didn't hurt her opinion
of me :))
Knocking like an 8-year-old on Halloween. Out on the highway, it was
barely there, if at all, but at/near WOT to get over the mountains, I
thought I had beer cans in my engine compartment.
Now, what can I do to eliminate this in the future (knowing that
actually getting the knock fixed is a pipe dream)? Carry a bottle of
octane booster and toss it in when I get to the hills? Top off the tank
with Premium?
Descending the hills, I decided to downshift to 2nd rather than ride my
brakes. Any long-term danger there? It was probably upwards of 10
miles (off and on) over the course of the weekend riding like that.
Also on descending - had loads of fun coming down the hills! Tight,
twisty roads. And my truck handled it better than my friend's CR-V.
Very tight, smooth and responsive. I can't imagine how good you guys
with Hotchkis kits have it.
