To make it as easy (and non-technical)...look at it this way:

Take a simple bicycle pump and stick your finger over tip of the nozzle.
Push the plunger slowly down and you will feel some pressure. Now, push the
plunger down much harder and the pressure increases as well. Now picture
what your engine (reciprocating assembly) has to go through when you
increase the boost pressure.

Sure, some will say "But I run 9# without any problems". Hey, it's your
engine and your money...not theirs. It's better to build it right the first
time than to just bolt stuff on without any foresight on what potential
problems you'll encounter.

When we were building the GM and Ford V8's with Paxtons, 6# was the max
unless a Dbl-Roller Chain and Roller Rockers were installed (stock ratio
unless otherwise specified). Why? SAFETY first...Horsepower comes after
that. If they wanted more than 9#'s boost, the bottom end was inspected and
higher quality bearings (and in some cases forged pistons, steel or billet
rods, and crank) were installed. Why do you think I installed the
Dbl-Roller chain and Roller Rockers on my V6? Granted I don't run a
Blower...yet...but the Nitrous puts just as much of a strain as the
supercharger...and in some test runs..more than a supercharger.
