Jerald,
Go to a fabric store. In the back should be an area that carries foam
rubber of various densities and thickness. If by some chance the fabric
stores in your area don't carry foam, check with an upholstery shop.

Subject: DML: Restoring Door Panels

I have been little-by-little restoring my 89 Dakota.

Lately, I have been turning my attention to the
interior - and pulled off the door panels this past
weekend. They had faded very badly along the top
and some of the plastic was actually turning to dust
before my very eyes.

So I sanded it down finishing with a 400 grit wet
sand. I found that an automotive paint supply
store had a spray can of paint for car interior
plastic (SEM brand) and had the EXACT color to
match my interior. I put this on and MAN does
it look like new....with exception that some of
the original texture is missing (due to the sanding).

So I was re-installing the armrests on the door
panels, and noticed that now that the panels look
so good, the ARMRESTS look bad! The foam inside
has crushed and they look - tired. So I pulled
out the foam and have been looking for something
to fill the armrests with.

I have tried sponge (too hard to cut to the right
shape), Home Depot insulation foam in a spray can
(gets the right shape, but crushes waaaay to easy),
even stuffing it with a towel (shape problems again).

Any ideas on what else I can try? The original
foam appears to have been shot in with some sort
of sprayer....

Jerald
