When I did my spring tune-up this year (new Set of MSD wires), I left the
heat shields off and instead used some of the MSD boot protector shielding.
This is a black fabric insulator tube that you cut to the desired length,
slide over the boot & install the wire. Works great (rated to like 1800 Deg
F), looks good, easy to use and I don't have to deal with the little shields
anymore (saved them just in case I ever need to re-use them).

I recently removed the shields in order to reroute the wires over the
MP valve covers from the distributor as I noticed a couple of the
convoluted tubes had melted near the firewall coming low around the
driver's side valve covers. So far, no ill effects. BTW, running
with MP headers ... might not work with stock exhaust manifolds.
