It may be that, under certain circumstances, the engine has
dropped a little below its powerband by time the tranny
has completed its shift because of slippage.

The 44RE has 2.74 (1st), 1.74 (2nd), 1.00 (3rd), 0.69 (OD -
I think) gearing. That's fairly wide-spaced. I know,
even with the Transgo kit under WOT at the track, that I
need to manually do the 2-3 shift at around 5200 rpm
to start 3rd gear at about 3300-3400 rpms when the shift
has been completed. On my motor, that is where my powerband
begins. Shifting below 5200 rpm and I wind up starting
3rd below my powerband and it costs me at least 2/10s before
the motor gets back into the powerband ... seems like ages
before that rpm needle begins to rise.
