removing mirror from housing

I wanted to paint my mirrors to match the trucks
color, has anyone removed the mirror from the housing?

I imagine the mirror is mounted by a circulating ball
that snaps into something to hold it in place. Any
particular way to pop it out or does it pop out at
all?
