3 factors at play here:

1) Marketing
2) Marketing
3) Marketing

When everyone else is selling a push-button system, you're looking to be
behind the times with a lever. Your average buyer (I wouldn't consider
most of the DML "average" buyers) doesn't care about how the 4WD
engages, nor are they aware that these fancy systems just mean more
chances to fail. They're turned off by something that is more "complex
to operate" than pushing a button.

I'm sure there was some Daimler influence here as well.

Did Dodge want to switch? We may never know. Did they have to switch
to meet the market? Probably.

Guess I really am keeping my '99 forever.
