Headers and Catalytic converter

I am about to buy MP headers for a 99 318 and would like to get a high flow
cat at the same time. I have a 3" Gibson cat-back already. My question is
should I leave the 2.5" pipe from the Y-pipe to cat and get a 2.5" cat or go
with a 3" cat with 3" pipe from the Y?
