The only time I had a problem with the front spindle was when I discovered
the threaded hole on the spindle, which the caliper pin screws down into,
was either crossthreaded or the threads were majorly messed up and the
caliper pin wouldnt tighten at all, and really just slid in and out with
nothing to grab onto. This was wayyyyyyyy back at like 30,000 miles and was
promptly replaced under warranty. Since then, I have had zero problems.

I've had the same problem on a few daks that I've worked on. Most don't
crack through but instead when you go to replace the brakes the caliper bolt
strips out of the spindle. I've made repairs by brazing in the hole and
then retapping with some success. If the spindle is cracked your going to
have to replace it. Make sure you never-seize the bolts so the problem
doesn't happen again.
Good luck
