Ditto on not mounting the spare to the grill, especially if you're going to
be doing any beach driving (you may not be planning to, but you know once
you're out there you'll want to!). Wheeling on the beach always gets the
Temp up on my Dak.
Along the lines of the Receiver hitch, if you have one and have a friend who
welds, you could rig up a tire holder to slide into the receiver hitch
pretty quick. Look at the design of the receiver mount bike racks, and use
that as the model. At the top, weld on a steel plate and some wheel studs to
mount the wheel/tire to. I've seen a few guys with pickups running this type
of set up on the trails when they've had the bed loaded with camping/hunting
gear.
Have a blast out on the banks.

I wouldn't do it...especially in this heat.
If you have a reciever thyoe hitch, get a storage rack that mounts in the
receiver.
You can either put gear on that or your spare.

Hey gang-
I'm planning a camping trip to the Core Banks of NC this weekend with some
friends
to catch the Persieds meteor shower (provided that frigging tropical storm
doesn't change our plans)...anyways, since its a small ferry across the
sound.... a bunch of gear, two sea kayaks, a load of firewood, coolers, etc.
is being loaded on my
truck for the trip. My 33" spare usually sits in the bed but has to be moved
temporarily to make room for everything. I started rigging up a hangar to
lash it to the brush guard on the front bumper, but got to wondering if
blocking the airflow to the radiator might cause some overheating? Is this a
bad idea for a road trip (4 hrs or so drive)? Just wondering...
