Most trouble codes will turn on your "check engine" light (or another
MIL). However, there are some that won't. (One common example is 12;
power disconnected within last 50 start cycles.) The only way to know for
sure that you don't have any codes is to check them. (with the key on-off
method or a scanner) If you get a MIL, you can be pretty sure a trouble
code was stored. If you get a trouble code that doesn't set off a MIL, its
probably not that important.
