FYI: I put a K&N "open element" style breather on my valve cover about
a year ago. Little did I know that the rubber base of the K&N was
hardening and becoming brittle. When I pulled it out to change my oil, it
broke into several pieces and fell down the valve cover. Not very cool! :-(

I switched to a "chrome wart" type and no complaints yet. The only
rubber there is the gasket that reduces the size of the valve cover hole,
similar to the stock breather.
