You won't get the same money out of the trade in that you will by
selling privately. Essentially when you sell your own vehicle,
you're in competition with the dealership. If you sell your product
to the competition, they're going to want to make a profit, which
means that they're not going to give you the same price that they
plan on selling it for.

That said, you might want to check the tax laws in your area. When I
got the Dak, I was planning on selling my Neon privately. Then I
found out about the difference in sales tax. See, since I traded it
in, I only had to pay sales tax on the difference in price. If I
sold my car privately, I would have had to pay sales tax on the
entire purchase price of the Dakota.

Bottom line, it saved me the sales tax rate times the trade in value
on the car. Made up a lot of the difference, plus saved me the
hassle of selling it myself. It was worth it to me, YMMV.

Also, I'll second what others have said about taking off the
performace goodies and selling those separately.
