Computer reset

Some say to reset the computer you disconnect the ground of the battery and
wait for 20 mins. or so and it will automatically reset, after reconnecting
the ground. Others say disconnect the ground, hold key to start position
for 15 to 20 seconds and reconnect ground. Okay here is my question. If
ground is off the battery what good does holding the key to the start
position for 15 to 20 seconds do if there is no juice coming from the
battery? How does this "bleed" the computer of its previous "knowledge of
settings"? And when you start it up again after reconnecting the negative
what exactly happens to the computer? Any response would be extremely
appreciated. (Bernd, Ron!)

Thanks
Jay
