Now I have to eat my air hat...

Ok, I started out today planning on doing a po-boy with ABS 3"
pipe instead of PVC, but I couldn't find the K&N with connector
hardware in town (which I figured I would have problems getting).

Since I had already purchased a few ABS elbows and 10' of
straight ABS, I just decided to do a dry fit and get the tubing
ready to go in prep for getting the cone filter eventually.

About halfway through the process I noticed that the bend off the
throttle body ended up lining up pretty well with the stock air
box outlet. So I applied the ABS cement between the elbow and
the straight, let it dry, cut the straight so it was about 1/2"
from the air box outlet, then clamped in place.

So what I have is a stock air box with drop in K&N with ABS
tubing instead of airhat.

After a test drive I can say with confidence and humility that my
first theory that the air box was tuned to ram better was not
correct, and that Steve's idea that the air hat chamber is
'de-tuned' to reduce resonance (read noise) seems to be very
correct.

A nice growl and a very noticeable pick-up after 3000-3500 or so
(forgot to look at tach, but that is where I would place it by
ear in memory).

No digital camera or scanner here so I'll just describe what I
did:

One 90 degree small radius curve 3" ID ABS bend with a male end
and a female end. Male end is attached to TB with section of
plumbing rubber connector (cut in half as was too long). Female
end ABS cemented to the straight piece. The straight piece was
cut so that it ended about 1/2" from the airbox opening. The
other half of the plumbing rubber connector went from the
straight to the air box with another two clamps.

I'll drive it like this for awhile then perhaps do the full cone
mod.

As it is, I am quite happy, and it cost me a lot less than a full
cone setup considering I had already previously invested in the
drop-in K&N.

I also got a female to female 3" ABS bend that has the larger
radius curve. When I eyeballed the setup, it would attach nicely
in the air boxes place and end up pointing right to where the
cone would be, so the option is still there.

Keep on Dakkin'
