Preload is the adjustment and the average breakin is about 500-1000 miles
depending on the hardness of the gears themselves. NEVER abuse them right
out of the shop (racing, jack rabbit starts, extended high-speed runs,
etc.).

Subject: DML: Rear End

I called a shop today about getting new gears put in the Dak. They said
$475 for 4.10 gears out the door. Then I asked them how much it would cost
if I supplied the gears, they said "$225 to align the gear set and preload"
This price seems much cheaper. Question is what does "preload" mean? Also
what kind of break in peroid is there when new gears are installed.

Thanks
