Not saying that the gist of what you are saying is wrong, but the definition
of a catalyst is that it enables a chemical reaction without itself being
modified. If the platinum is being used as a catalyst by the alcohol, then it
is by definition not being 'broken down'. Not trying to pick nits here, I'm
sure you are recalling something a lot like what you are writing.
