Ok, in an earlier thread I mentioned my buddy who has a 00 QuadCab 5.9 4x4.
He purchases a HT PTM and gets marginal
performance increases along with some serious detonation. Sooo, I call HT
tech to find out the deal. A lot of what they said has already been covered
in one way or another on this list, so I was kind of glad everyone seems to
be on the same
sheet. As mostly everyone knows, HT first generation PTM was recalled for
various issues, some had engine lights problems, some detonation, some lack
of performance, hesitation, and some had all of them! So they go back to the
drawing board, and come out with a new design, and sent a couple out for beta
testing. Which I believe some of you on the list where party
to. Then Rev.B was released to the public, which is where we are at today.
So what did they say when I told them by buddies QuadCab was pinging like
crazy and their was little-to-no performance gain? Get your money back. ??
That was a surprise! But, he was honest. He explained that the majority of
Rev. B chips out there have been working as planned with no problems.
However, they have been noticing a few Dodges that seem to ALREADY have a
detonation problem that the PTM just magnifies. He said they have beat their
heads in trying to rectify these weird cases but with no luck. Switching out
the PTM will do no good. Basically, if you got a truck that doesn't like the
PTM, then it's no PTM for you. Interesting huh?!? He
fells that a lot of new model Dodges have detonation problems straight from
the factory, and that a lot of times Dodge can't seem to solve the problem.
He said they reduced the HP on the chip and soften the advance which seems
to work well with most Dodges, except for those like my buddy. So I think
I'm going to hold out until a couple of you guys (with 4x4's) give it a shot
and see what you think. Cuz so far the only application I know of with a 4x4
did not work out to well. In fact, he's boxing his up to ship it back.; I'm
going to try and talk him into putting a therm on first. What!?! you cry, He
doesn't have a thermostat on it now? Well OF COURSE he's pinging silly!
Guys, I'm telling ya, it sounds like the Jolly Green giant is inside his
engine beating on it with a pall-peen hammer. Even when it's cold. If a new
therm stops it, I'll eat his old one.
