Steve, are you sure that you replaced the t-stat in the right direction?
Those aftermarket units are made to be used with LA engines with the stat on
the supply-side of radiator (flow-wise). Now that they're on the return
side rather than supply, the diagram on the box is incorrect. The direction
of the t-stat has changed now, relative to the block. The copper bulb and
spring should be toward the water pump/block, with the pointed end toward
the radiator return.
** ALL 4.7ers PLEASE NOTE ** that the diagram on the back of your Stant,
Shaw, whatever, is wrong and that you should note the placement of your
original unit. The bulb and spring should face your water pump and block.
You might have had a different problem, Steve, but this is a point I've been
meaning to mention and kept forgetting. And yes, the toughest part is
getting to and from the bolts. Good luck with getting it worked out. I
re-replaced mine this weekend and have to say that the Stant unit is crap.
The Shaw unit is a little cooler and looks to be on the money at 180. I was
only able to find it at AutoZone which, by the way, just went 24/7 in my
neighborhood. I had always been a Pep Boys customer, but now that AutoZone
is keeping my hours I just might convert.

It didn't work for some reason. It was a terrible pain of getting the
housing off with a big hand. I was cussing about the fruit loop who decided
on this position of placement of the thermostat.
I used the Super Stat but it went red-line after a test ride. I had to go
back and replace it with the Mopar unit again for now.
