It could be the radical timing curve syndrome. At cruising speed, the total
timing can be anywhere from 39-42 degrees BTDC. On a quick stab, the overly
advanced timing can cause noticeable, if not severe, "Pinging" (gasoline grade
depending).

I found this to be the case on several Dakota's (97-99) after initially testing
a local DML'ers '98 Dak with my scanner. We found that at cruising, he was at
40 degrees BTDC and on a passing "stab", it pinged pretty bad for about a
second or two before if went away.
