Ryan,
        I think the newsgroup is a far better interface. Offline reading &
composing, plus all the cool stuff you can do with a good newsreader
(killfiles, thread watching, thread ignoring, etc.), and more. I spend
a fair amount of time on ZDNet's online message boards, but it's a big
enough pain that I have significantly reduced the amount of time I spend
on there over the last year.
