Oops...I should explain myself on why I asked that question.
When I had first purchased my truck, I was wondering why some days it would
run like bat-outta-hell and others it would just be so-so. I used to drive
my other vehicles with the vents in the Top and Bottom Open position. Turns
out, this (on the Dakota) is a Defroster position as well and cycles the A/C
compressor, causing a power loss at random. My old service manager pointed
that out to me (it's not very clear in the '97 Owners Manual) and I now
don't use that unless I need it. Power is consistent since then.
It may be worth it to check....

Just a dumb question...are you leaving your defroster on? (In the Top and
Bottom vent location?)
