Here's my take on this... A long time family friend I know... is a
mechanical wizzard
almost. Hes serviced fleets, school busses - owned several car repair
businesses of his
own... and owns a couple semi trailor loads of cars. (most dont run I
believe LOL)
Anyway - my point was he knows his stuff (as do the majority of you
folks) We were
talking about just this very subject this past summer - when I was
telling him about my
transmission troubles. I think it can be agreed in general, that what
most contributes
to a healthy transmissions death - is heat. And in city driving - stop
and go -
constant up and down shifting - I agree - that the use of an over drive
gear will cause
the transmission to do even more work. ths creating more heat and thus
shortening the
transmissions life. This guy was telling me - to leave over drive off in
the city for
just those reasons. However - the over drive gear is there as a way to
save on fuel.
What I would do - is I would leave the over drive on in highway driving
(at any speeds -
not just above 50) unless you are pulling a trailor or in step grades..
etc... If you
are going to use OD in city driving conditions - a transmission fluid
cooler would be
almost a necessity. Heck - in city driving - a trans fluid cooler is a
good idea if you
leave OD off or on.

After I get my transmission replaced - I'm having a fluid cooler
installed. Currently I
an waiting to see how much longer the transmission will last before it
croaks. Its not
working too well LOL.
