I've seen people attempt the repair on their own, with little blister-pack
kits from Wal-Mart, and it wasn't pretty. Or effective for that matter.
People who do auto-glass will have the gear to repair it, if it can be
repaired (and it sounds like it *can*, unless there's too much of a crater
at the point of impact). Some insurance companies (USAA, for one) are
pretty generous (by generous, I mean no deductible) about that repair,
because it is a lot cheaper than replacing a windshield. That was my
experience, but it *may* be because I lived in a state (VA) where some
windshield cracks are justification to fail inspection, and thus not an
optional repair. Call your insurance company.
