Actually, that is probably what did it, Flip. Running it hard like that for
a little bit along with the cleaner probably did wonders in getting rid of
any carbon buildup you might have had in your engine.

My 6er didn't ping for the first 30,000 miles. Then it started
pinging. It was really getting bad, and annoying me no end. I got
so frustrated I went out and bought one of those fuel system cleaners
that you put in your gas tank. I don't believe in them, but I bought
it anyway, and I put it in. Drove it out, filled up the tank again-
it was still pinging. Drove that tank down, then I was going to the
drag strip, so I tanked up with super (usually run 87 octane) Took
it to the strip, ran 4 passes- it hasn't pinged since. (back on 87
octane)
I'm not saying either of those things affected it, but that is what
was different. Maybe it self-healed. I don't know.

The pinging phenomenon seems to cut across the entire line of
engines, V6 or
V8 makes little difference. Here's a link to a series of Technical
Service
Bulletins:

http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/%7Edfritz/technical/Gas/Trouble/Problems.htm

I have also seen complaints about pinging on the V10's in the Dodge
Ram
list. I haven't kept up with the pinging complaints on the 4.7 though
so
you'll have to poke around and do some searching on your own.
