Pressure, as was said earlier in the post there is a vent tube that allows
displaced air to escape so fuel goes in. As fuel fills up the tube also
starts filling up. There is no place for displaced air to go so pressure
increases. That's what pops the trigger mechanism on the gas nozzle.

Just curious as to how the nozzle at the fuel pump actually works. Exactly
how does it knows when to shut off? And when it shuts off why can more gas
be pumped in when the attendant rounds the price off?

Hey Digger,
It sounds like you got condensation that is freezing in the air return
line in the tank. If the air cannot return to a point above the end of the
gas nozzle then the nozzle will shut off. You might want to try some fuel
conditioner that removes moisture from fuel. This sounds like the air cannot

get out as fast as the fuel is going in so the tank neck is filling up and
shutting of the automatic nozzle. Bill
