"Radical" Changes at DaimlerChrysler

A management shakeup at DaimlerChrysler will be part of a sweeping
restructuring of the financially troubled company, The Financial Times
reported.

A new "executive automotive committee" under Chairman Jurgen Schrempp will
oversee the group's Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler divisions, its
commercial-vehicle activities, and its union with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors.
The new arrangement will replace DaimlerChrysler's current system of
separate automotive, sales, and marketing councils, and will further
strengthen Schrempp's position at the group.
In related news, The Associated Press reported that the new system will also
result in "massive layoffs" at Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

Mitsubishi is expected to cut 8,000 of its 65,000 employees worldwide and
close two of the firm's passenger car plants. DaimlerChrysler, which owns 34
percent of the Japanese automaker, is also expected to overhaul its
management structure.
In further news related to the changes at DaimlerChrysler, the company's
supervisory board is expected to review plans to put Mercedes engines in
some Chrysler models for the U.S. market, according to The Wall Street
Journal.

Mercedes engines could be used in Chrysler's next generation of large cars,
the report said, adding that DaimlerChrysler also is considering using a
small Mercedes diesel engine in PT Cruisers sold in Europe.
Though such a move could help cut costs and possibly give the Chrysler brand
a boost, critics worry it could dilute the Mercedes brand.

DaimlerChrysler will report its annual earnings Monday. Analysts are
expecting the automaker to reveal a huge fourth-quarter loss at Chrysler,
possibly more than double the $512 million deficit chalked up at the
division in the third quarter.
