Tranny is Dead

Lost the tranny last night. I have all my forward gears, but no reverse. So
this morning i took the truck over to my mechanic and he said the
transmission is shot. It is going to cost about $1600 to get a rebuilt one
put in. Does this seem like a good price, or should I get some other quotes?
How hard would it be to swap in a 5 speed instead?
What really hurts is that the truck is my only way to get around, so I need
to get it in fixed soon.
