I don't have a detailed Blackstone analysis but I've been told by many
people, mechanics included, that varnish is the major problem with regular
oil. I have also not cut my oil filters apart but I only use K&N filters
and Castrol Syntec 5W-50 oil. At 5,000 miles, my oil is fairly clean so I
have to assume my engine is pretty clean and the oil filter is doing its
job. Mechanics have told me that tearing an engine down after 100,000 miles
with synthetic oil usage basically yields a brand new looking engine on the
inside. I, too, won't go as far with synthetics as manufacturers say you
can. At this point I'm guessing that my engine will get its first teardown
at around 50K miles. At that time I'll examine everything closely. I will
probably opt to go with the RT heads at that time as well.
So we shall see.

Subject: DML: mobil 1 ?'s
I would like to know the real benefits of using a synthetic motor oil. I
run Mobil 1 synthetic in my truck and I change my oil about every 3000-3500
miles. I don't do any of that 6000 mile interval stuff because I just don't
trust oil sitting in my truck that long, but can anyone tell me if Mobil 1
is really worth it or am I just wasting my money on the stuff. I hear that
it is really good and I don't have the knowledge or the resources for
tearing down an engine and really seeing whether the Mobil 1 is doing its
job. Any input on the matter from anyone will be greatly appreciated. Oh
yeah, and on the 6000 mile interval guys, I'm not knocking what you're
doing, but do you guys really trust the filter to hold up that long? I'm
willing to believe that the Mobil 1 is good stuff because of the
manufactuers who roll their engines off the line with them...(Porsche,
Mercedes, The Vettes and Vipers....), but I don't know of any filter that I
would trust to last that long. Let me know what you guys think.
Robert.
