Look around town and find someplace that carries expanded metal and/or
perforated metal. The expanded is fairly common and easy to find, you'll
recognize it when you see it, it has kind of a diamond pattern to it. If you
like that stuff, look for the rolled kind that has eliminated the sharp
edges on the cuts.

Perforated metal is much cooler IMHO, it's sheet metal with holes punched in
it. The most common are round holes of varying sizes and spacing, but it's
also available in some pretty cool patterns. If you're near a large
metropolitan area you might be fortunate enough to have a perforater near
you, and you can go in and ask for some scrap for cheap or free!

For some examples, here's the perf company I used to do business with:

Of course, you can do a web search and see what else you can come up with!

Good luck!
