Synthetic's have some great advantages to them as far as longevity and
performance. The biggest problems are that for older engines they can be
"too good". For instance many people have developed leaks or burning
because the synthetic not only flows better it is much better at cleaning
the engine of deposits which may be covering small holes in the gaskets and
seals. I've seen and heard many a story of people running 10-16 thousand
miles or more between oil changes and pulling basically good oil out of the
vehicle at that point.
I run pure synthetic in my Shadow and it comes out dirty but much
cleaner and nicer than the dino juice at that's at 4-5K change intervals.
It is good stuff and if you need some of the properties you can always mix
it. Mobil 1 is fully compatible with standard engine oils (says so on the
label) and it's better than the store bought mixes.

Common sense says "if it's not broke don't fix it."
Engineers say "if it's not broke we didn't make it complex enough."
