I went from 255/55/17 to 275/50/17, almost the same overall dia. I'd say I
lost about .3 to .5 mpg. I assume due to extra rolling resistance, wind
resistance and rotating mass.

Don't forget with a taller tire you increase your rotating mass. And the
further out the mass is on the wheel the more it affects your
acceraration/milage.
