<snip>
I once managed to drive from Detroit to Toledo and back at well over 100 mph
in my 1970 Z-28, sometimes hitting speeds over 130 mph through Friday night
traffic. What made this especially stupid was that I did this on bias-ply
tires!
<snip>

Dude, racing on bias-ply tires wasn't stupid! Only in the last ten years
have they gotten radial tire technology up to where they can run with
bias-ply tires on extended high-speed runs. Ask anyone who's worked on
Highway Patrol cars back in the 80's - they all used bias-ply tires because
the radials couldn't hold up for extended high-speed runs.

All else being equal, I'd take bias-ply over radials anyday for running at
high speeds. However, for everyday driving, radials rule because they have
a lower rolling resistance at highway speeds.
