That is another option that had occurred to me. I've replaced heater cores
in other vehicles, it is not real high on my list of fun things to do. How
bad is it on the Dakota?

The needle position sounds right, but I'd get the heater checked out. I
think I remember reading that someone on the list replaced the heater core.
