You may want to check with places like Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, farm
and fleet type stores, etc. I've seen some winches that are really inexpensive
(as winches go) that can handle about 5-6,000lbs. The catch is that they are
pretty slow, but they'll get the job done sooner or later. :-)
For example, here's one for less than a ben franklin that will handle a
6,000lb rolling load or 2,000lbs straight pull:

Really slow at 6 fpm, but you sure can't beat the price! Plus, it looks like
its got a manual crank as a backup. I don't know anything about the quality
(or lack thereof) ;-) of the above winch, just postin' it as an example. For
what you want, you should be able to pick up a winch for considerably cheaper
than the standard sort of winch used for offroading recovery.
